The Objective:
GameStop is an American video game, consumer electronics, and gaming merchandise retailer, headquartered in Grapevine, Texas, and is the largest video game retailer worldwide. It is a gaming and trade-in destination for Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo games, systems, consoles & accessories.
GameStop partnered with Datametica to pursue a multi-phased initiative to migrate existing Teradata, Vertica, Informatica, MS SQL Server, and AWS data lake to Google Cloud Platform (GCP). The goal for the cloud digital transformation was to overcome the challenges of their existing systems in order to deliver excellence to the customers.
Challenges: High Operational Cost with Poor Performance of the current EDW system
GameStop faced high operational costs, lower performance, no access to real-time data and data quality issues on legacy Teradata data warehouse. Moreover, the on-premise data-warehousing systems were difficult to scale while limiting in both capacity and capability.
The Solution: Migration to GCP with Cloud Storage as Data Lake and BigQuery as Enterprise Data Warehouse
- Datametica advanced solutions and automated product suite ensured accelerated and efficient cloud migration to the Google cloud platform.
- GCP foundation set-up was done with data model redesigning based on client requirements.
- One time Historical data migration of Teradata to the Google Cloud Platform
- Created incremental data ingestion pipeline from the source systems to the GCP
- New Pipeline was established to transform raw data into refined one using GCP products
- Code Conversion of Bteq Scripts, Stored procedure, DB objects such as views, functions, Teradata table DDL to equivalent BigQuery (BQ) using the Datametica Automated code (SQL, Script) and ETL conversion Tool – Raven.
- Cognos and Tableau reporting tool integration with BigQuery was completed.
- Data Validation and Reconciliation process were automated using Pelican that provided 100% accuracy in data validation between Teradata and BigQuery by cell-level comparison without data copy, coding requirement.
- Datametica used several GCP tools/services such as Googe Cloud Storage (GCS), BigQuery (BQ), Dataflow, Dataproc, Datalab, IAM, Pub/Sub, Cloud Functions, Composer to simplify this complex cloud migration and overcome challenges related to time, cost, and scalability.
